Aeroplanes typically transport passengers over distances of more than 1,000 kilometres. Freight is also transported by air, although the share is very low.
Air transport has a number of advantages (high speeds, the possibility to make deliveries to isolated areas by helicopter), but goes with significant drawbacks (high costs, vulnerability to the weather, infrastructure requirements, limited capacity). These are obstacles to its use for cargo transportation.
Claims about the negative impacts of air transport on the environment are fully justified. Read the factsheet to find out more about how the international community hopes to improve the situation.
