There are some very important considerations to bear in mind when installing an outdoor toilet:
- Use a waterproof lining to prevent raw sewage from entering the groundwater (also bearing in mind soil features).
- The minimum permitted distance between a latrine and a water source is 25 metres.
- Don’t dig a cesspool where the groundwater level is high (i.e. within 2 or 3 metres of the surface).
- When deciding on a location for your toilet, take the prevailing wind patterns into account so as to protect yourself and your neighbours from unpleasant smells.
There are several innovative solutions on the market, including peat toilets, chemical toilets and bio-toilets.
