House sparrow

Passer domesticus

Description:
About 15 centimetres long, this robust bird has a broad body, a fairly big head and a stout bill. It is brown with black streaks above and grey below. The male has a grey crown and a black bib. The female has a pale tuft of feather above the eye, and the young bird resembles the female.

Habitat:
The house sparrow lives in both rural and urban areas throughout Europe.

Habits:
The house sparrow is a social bird that nests in cavities in buildings or under roof tiles.
