Male steppe grasshoppers measure between 14 and 18 millimetres, and females between 19 and 25 millimetres. They are brown to olive in colour.
The steppe grasshopper is dependent on a variety of meadow-type biotopes and prefers areas with tall grass cover. Populations can be found throughout Europe and Asia.
These grasshoppers are active during the day, feeding mostly on grasses (graminae). They are regarded as pests in meadows.
