Chaffinch

Fringilla coelebs

Description:
About 15 centimetres long, the chaffinch is easily recognised by its double white wing bar, white tail sides and grey-green rump. The male has rusty-red head sides and breast, and a blue-grey crown and nape. The female is grey-green above with a faint brown tinge, and greyish white below.

Habitat:
The chaffinch can be found in all types of woodland, as well as in parks and gardens. It is widespread throughout Europe and does not migrate in winter.

Habits:
The chaffinch builds neat nests in tree forks, camouflaged on the outside with lichens and moss. It feeds on insects, seeds and grain.
