European pond terrapin

Emys orbicularis

Up to 36 centimetres long, the European pond terrapin can live for 100 years. Its carapace is fairly flat, brownish black to greenish and greyish with light stripes or dots. Its legs, neck, head and tail are greyish black with yellow spots.

The pond terrapin lives in all types of fresh or semi-saltwater wetlands, and even in small pools. It can be found throughout Europe and eastern Asia.

The European pond terrapin feeds on amphibians, fish, water invertebrates and carrion.
