Rock dove and feral pigeon

Columba livia

Description:
The rock dove is an ancestor of the feral pigeon. It has a pale grey back and upper wings and a darker head, neck and tail, with two black wing bars and snow-white rump. The feral pigeon varies in plumage.

Habitat:
The rock dove breeds in caves and on steep cliffs, mostly on sea coasts but also in mountains. The feral pigeon is widespread and commonly found in urban areas, breeding on the ledges of buildings and bridges.

Habits:
The birds breed several times a year, laying one or two eggs at a time. They eat mainly grain and feed their chicks with a special secretion during their first week.
