Common toad

Bufo bufo

Up to 15 centimetres in length, the female common toad is significantly bigger than the male. The skin is a warty greyish brown, yellowish or brick coloured with little or no pattern. The beanlike glands behind the eyes emit an unpleasant secretion, which protects it against some predators.

The common toad is found in all kinds of land habitats at different altitudes. It can be found throughout Europe with the exception of Ireland and the far north.

The common toad breeds in still and slow-moving waters, but spends the rest of the year on land. A nocturnal amphibian, it feeds on invertebrates.
