Choose cleaning products that do not pollute the water and soil

Some household chemicals (such as bubble baths, shampoos, detergents and cleaning fluids) contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment. These chemical compounds are mixed with household wastewater (from cesspools or sewerage systems) and enter treatment facilities. There, the chemicals kill the microorganisms that are used to help decompose organic human waste (in a process known as "activated sludge"), thus compromising the effectiveness of the cleaning process.

Some useful tips:

  • Choose cleaning products that do not pollute the water and soil.
  • Get into the habit of using older, traditional cleaning methods and materials. The factsheet "How to protect water from contamination" contains some helpful hints and reminders.
